As along with the Canadians, the Pop,e and whoever else played operator during the warming of relations between Havana and Washington, there could are one unwitting and unaware aid to the talks: Hugo Chávez.
Across the Caribbean Sea in Caracas, the Venezuelan government has for more than a decade been bankrolling Cuba’s revolution, sending slightly below 100,000 barrels everyday of oil within what analysts believe to remain $5 billion to $15 billion of annual aid, or 15% on the country’s gdp.
Yet, Venezuela’s own economy is crumbling.

But this development leaves Chavez’s successor, Nicolas Maduro completely isolated in the area. He no longer has his anti-imperialist ally even though the all Latin America accepts more pragmatic and US-friendly governance.
Isolating Maduro further, on Friday Obama signed sanctions against top Venezuelan officials accused of human rights violations.
Even just a couple weeks ago Maduro was a student in a very tight corner, cannot enact much-needed economic reforms. Now, the floor has fallen from under him as Cuba effectively defects into the enemy.
It’s apt to be an arduous year ahead for him.
